Then someone typed “sad 80s-style song with a saxophone” into a text box, and in eleven seconds, that saxophone wept better than anyone ever could. Welcome to the great transformation—not the one musicians feared, nor the one tech enthusiasts promised.

The Chess Match (With Pawns That Sue)

To understand where we are, we must remember where we came from. In June 2024, the three major record labels—Sony, Universal, and Warner—dragged Suno and Udio, the two most famous AI music generation platforms, into court. They accused them of training their models on millions of copyrighted tracks without asking anyone’s permission.

The next move, however, was the real spectacle. Within a year, the majors realized that if you can’t beat them, you buy them: Universal reached a deal with Udio in October 2025, and Warner made peace with Suno in November, even forming a partnership for “next-generation licensed music AI.” Sony alone continues to fight—and one must admit they are holding their ground with the stubbornness of a guitarist who refuses to tune their instrument.

There are also those who have genuinely won: a Munich court recently ruled in favor of GEMA, the German copyright society, in a lawsuit against Suno, dismantling the “fair use” defense that AI companies use as a shield in every debate.

The takeaway? In the music industry, revolution doesn’t stop. It negotiates, it licenses, and it monetizes. It’s the same old Lego bricks, just in new packaging.

The Flood No One Foresaw

Yet the most striking part isn’t unfolding in the courtroom—it’s in the numbers. Deezer reports that 44% of new uploads to its platform are AI-generated—roughly 75,000 tracks per day, detected with a claimed 99.8% accuracy. Let’s pause for a moment: nearly half of the world’s new music is no longer being composed. It is being ordered, like a pizza.

And yet, here comes the first illuminating twist: these tracks account for only 1% to 3% of total streams. In plain terms: we are producing artificial music at an industrial pace, but our ears—for now—continue to look for something human. It is proof that music isn’t just another commodity: technical correctness isn’t enough; it has to be real. The audience knows this by instinct.

Spotify chose a clever path: instead of labeling the AI, it labels the humans. The “Verified by Spotify” badge rewards artists who have a genuine presence both on and off the platform. The message is clear: the new mark of credibility isn’t just being on Spotify, but existing even when Spotify is turned off. A concept so old it feels revolutionary.

The Question We Dare Not Ask

Now for the serious part—because an editorial that relies solely on irony is like a song without a chorus. What really changes when the CEO of Suno—a company valued at $2.45 billion—claims that “most people don’t enjoy most of the time they spend making music”? He later admitted to phrasing it differently, but the core idea remains: it is the manifesto of a profoundly new view where music is an output to optimize, rather than a process to experience.

And here lies the heart of the matter. Nobody wept for the dishwasher taking away the joy of washing dishes by hand. But the laborious, frustrating, repetitive process of learning an instrument is the product: it shapes who you are, builds communities, and fuels identity. A model that hands you a finished track without letting you go through the journey gives you a ready-made meal, but steals your kitchen.

Still, dwelling only on complaints would be foolish. The very tool flooding Deezer with mediocrity is also tearing down barriers: a young artist with limited means in Dakar can compose full orchestral scores; a musician with dystonia can continue creating; a producer can use AI for sketches and demos, then bring their own craft, sweat, and taste into the final product. The deal between Universal and Udio explicitly includes an opt-in system where artists choose whether to lend their voice and style in exchange for direct compensation. This isn’t the apocalypse: it’s a new collective bargaining agreement waiting to be written well.

The Unwritten Finale

There is a touching detail in this whole story. As part of its deal with Warner, Suno acquired Songkick—the platform for discovering live concerts. The machine built to generate infinite music bought the compass that guides you toward real people playing in front of real people. Perhaps it isn’t a strategy: perhaps it’s a confession.

In recent years, music has become endless, instantaneous, and practically free. Precisely because of this, it is rediscovering its oldest value: human connection. Algorithms can write a flawless chorus in eleven seconds, but they cannot replicate what happens when a thousand people sing the same song out of tune, together. That, for now, remains a bug no AI seems interested in fixing.

The piano isn’t dead. It just has something to prove again.

Tam & Tam
